About the CollaborativeThe San Jose Tobacco-Free Collaborative is a network of community agencies dedicated to reducing the impact of tobacco use and addiction on our community. We offer a full range of tobacco use prevention, education and quit-smoking programs that are culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate. Most of our services are free of charge and open to all San Jose residents. Breathe California is the lead agency for
the Collaborative, which is funded by tobacco settlement dollars through
a grant from the San Jose Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund. The association
has been fighting tobacco addiction for more than 40 years and provides
technical assistance to Collaborative members and coordinates counter-marketing
activities. Prevention and Education Our member agencies are working in the schools and out in the community to prevent young people from becoming addicted to tobacco and educating the public about the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. Collaborative members offer a variety of programs that focus on giving young people the skills to avoid peer pressures, teaching them about the manipulative tactics of the tobacco industry, and helping them make healthy choices. Tobacco CessationFor those who already use tobacco, the Collaborative can help break the cycle of addiction. Member agencies offer tobacco cessation programs for teens and adults that provide proven techniques for quitting. We also offer support and guidance to help you stay off tobacco. For a program near you, call us at 408.998.5864. Counter-MarketingYoung people today are continually bombarded with tobacco marketing and entertainment images that portray tobacco use as a cool adult activity. The Tobacco-Free Collaborative is working to counter those messages with marketing activities that promote a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle, including a float in the San Jose Holiday Parade in December and a World No Tobacco Day celebration in May. Our Not Buyin’ It campaign is directed at young people and encourages them not to buy the tobacco industry’s lies or their deadly products. The campaign includes public service announcements, a Web site (www.notbuyinit.org), and other counter-marketing activities. |
