Hundreds of families and other baseball fans joined the San Jose Tobacco-Free Collaborative in celebrating World No Tobacco Day at the San Jose Giants’ stadium on May 31. The San Jose Jazz Society added to the festivities as adults and kids alike played games and gathered information about tobacco use. Collaborative members surveyed nearly 300 people about tobacco use issues, which will help us as we develop a strategic plan for tobacco in San Jose. Everyone who filled out a survey received a small gift. Held every year on May 31, World No Tobacco Day calls worldwide attention to the impact of tobacco use on public health and the need to reduce tobacco dependence. This year’s theme was “Up in Smoke: Tobacco’s Cost to the Family.” San Jose Giants games are a big draw for area families because baseball is fun for all ages. The Tobacco-Free Collaborative celebrated World No Tobacco Day at the stadium to help focus public attention on the devastating toll tobacco is taking on families. Nearly 2,500 people attended the afternoon game. Collaborative members handed fans tobacco-free baseball cards as they entered with the message “Hit a Home Run. Strike Out Tobacco.” The card warns about the dangers of tobacco use and provides contact information for getting help. This season a tobacco-free card will be included in every pack of San Jose Giants baseball cards and a billboard inside the stadium reinforces the message: “Hit a Home Run. Strike Out Tobacco.” For more information, call 408.998.5866. |
